Program Purpose
To provide the occupational physician, nurse and allied health personnel with recent information that will assist them in providing improved health care to workers and management.
Objectives
- Review the historical perspective and rational behind the changes made by the Kansas Legislature. Present the actual legislation.
- Explain how the above changes in legislation are affecting physicians' evaluation and treatment of workers' compensation patients in regards to causation.
- Present actual cases and give direction of anticipation of judicial interpretation of above legislative changes.
- Provide insight to all parties involved including providers what third parties administrators are going to require in order to address above legislative changes.
- Present how humor affects your physical and mental health.
- Describe techniques for incorporating humor into the work environment.
- List the ways to bring humor into every situation.
- List the requirements of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA).
- List employers' GINA compliance requirements regarding medical certifications.
- Identify the defining characteristics of the Beighton Score.
- Describe how joint hypermobility predisposes to specific injuries.
- State how ergonomic procedures are affected by BJHS.
- Review the relevant recent changes in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administrations physical certification examination.
- Describe the role of vaccination in disease prevention.
- Prevent the risk of not vaccinating against childhood diseases.
- List the different types of vaccines and their appropriate usage.
- Present the current guidelines for vaccination.
- Identify the characteristics of Traumatic Brain Injury.
- Identify red flags requiring further evaluation.
- List the post-traumatic effects of TBI.
- Present what is new at ACOEM and how it relates to other health professionals especially occupational nurses.
- State ACOEM's vision and mission statement.
- State the importance of Disaster Training.
- List options for communication in disaster setting.
- Describe a plan for 24 to 72 hours post disaster and list the needs of those affected.
Accreditation for Physicians
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and the Great Plains College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. The American College of occupational and Environmental Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 10 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Accreditation for Nurses
The Department for Health and Human Services at Johnson County Community College is approved as a provider of continuing education by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. This course offering is approved for a maximum of 13.2 contact hours applicable for RN and LPN relicensure. Kansas State Board of Nursing Approved Provider Number: LT 0027-049. Hours will be awarded for documented attendance only.
